Welcome To Our Blog Page

As Educational Leader of Margaret Ives I would like to welcome all existing and new families to our MICCC blog. In 2015 we were rated as exceeding the National Quality Standard across all seven quality areas and as a Centre we continue to grow and challenge ourselves daily. This blog will keep everyone in the loop about what professional training, perspectives and theories we are exploring and how it impacts on our practices and documentation.

Cheers,

Ollie Lauder

Our Vision

Margaret Ives Community Children's Centre constantly strives for excellence in early childhood care and education.

Margaret Ives welcomes all families, from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. The Centre promotes an understanding of diversity and an enriched and welcoming environment free from prejudice and discrimination. We encourage and support links within the community and foster connections between children and families.

We value each unique individual in our care. We respect their right to be safe, happy, secure and to feel a sense of belonging, with their family and cultural values embraced. We believe children learn best through a play-based curriculum that stems from reflective dialogue. All children are entitled to programs that foster independence, self-esteem and responsibility for themselves, others and the environment. We support individual child needs and interests, creating opportunities for children to develop to their full potential. Our children benefit from parents and educators working in partnership to provide supportive, secure, relationship-based learning environments.

Menus and Nutrition

The Centre is responsible for providing a safe, healthy, caring and nurturing environment. As well as providing adequate nutrition, we promote and encourage the establishment of good food habits early in life. Well-nourished and active children are more likely to be alert, vigorous and happy. Their general good health helps them have happier relationships with other children and with their families. Fostering healthy eating habits and activity patterns in childhood can reduce the prevalence of lifestyle diseases. Eating with other children helps promote self-reliance and social skills and encourages an interest in a variety of foods.

Our menus have been prepared by our qualified Chef, Crisy, and cover a wide variety of cuisines and food groups and we have a rotating four-week schedule of menus. Download a sample menu now.

When planning children’s nutrition and creating menus we take the following into consideration:

A nutritious menu that provides at least half of a child's daily food and nutrition needs for key nutrients, and promotes good health

All staff trained in food hygiene, with food safety practices in place

An eating environment that is safe, positive and supports healthy eating for children, and

A comprehensive Food and Nutrition policy.

How You Can Help?

Get involved in the Governing Committee
The Governing Committee is elected at the Centre's Annual General Meeting in September each year. Prior to the meeting, parents are requested to nominate if they are interested in becoming a member. Your commitment will be to attend one Committee meeting per month, plus sub-committee meetings as required where your particular skills and experience are valued. You may also volunteer to assist at the Centre's social functions.

Do you have specialist skills for our sub-committees?
You may not wish to commit yourself to the Governing Committee but your specialist skills may be useful to one of our sub-committees, either on a regular basis or just from time to time as needs arise.
If you are willing to help in any area, please speak to our Centre Director and let her know your skills, your availability and how you could assist.

Areas of interest for our children
As a member of one of the Centre's families (father, grandmother, etc) you may like to visit our children to read them a story, talk about your occupation i.e. a Doctor showing x-rays, or undertake a show and tell session about your hobby i.e. knitting or gardening. Children love special visitors and learning something new - plus, our carers will help you with your presentation. You may have skills and experience to assist us in certain areas or with special projects, such as the Library, artwork or woodwork. You could also volunteer to assist with the running of the Centre's social functions or our Working Bees from time to time.
Please speak to the Centre Director with offers of assistance.

Annual Report
Each year we summarise our Centre's goals and achievements in our Annual Report. It is a wonderful insight into the work we do with the children across the year. You can download our most recent annual report using the link below.
